First planting was done in 1930s by an Italian family. Jimmy Wong and Mark Morton took over the vineyard and business in 2013 after the ex-owner passed away. Under the leadership of the new management team, new energies and ideas were injected into the business and Jarrah Ridge modernised its range of labels, marketing strategy and successfully penetrated into the Asian market. It took the pair tremendous effort, investment and time to finally turn the business around and Jarrah Ridge started producing award-winning wines again. Now Jarrah Ridge has evolved into the home of various successful wine brands including Jarrah Ridge, Zin, Old Wood etc and exports to various countries including China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.
GEOGRAPHICAL
FIRST
PLANTING
IN
1930
The Swan District has a warm to hot Mediterranean climate. It is very dry during ripening and harvest, with most rainfall (167 millimetres or 6.5 inches) occurring during winter and spring. The soils of the Swan District are typically fertile limestone soils, very deep, with excellent moisture retention capacity. It’s no surprise the region has claimed its spot as a leading producer of a vast range of top quality wines. The oldest vines in Jarrah Ridge vineyard are more than 90 years old. The yield of these old vines is not high, but they produce strong fine wines. All these features create the inherent conditions for Jarrah Ridge to become a premium producer in Western Australia.
ECOLOGICAL
PLANTING
CONCEPT
The vineyard is planted in accordance with the original ecological planting mode, relying on natural irrigation without any artificial supplementary irrigation, which fully guarantees the grape quality while retaining the original terroir flavor of the grapes. Roses were planted at the end of rows as an early warning system for the winegrower. They attract insects like aphids before the vines. They also get fungal disease like black rot and mildew before the vines do. We now know that the strain of mildew that roses are susceptible to is not the same as vines but if the conditions are good for mildew on roses you can be sure they are good for downy mildew on vines too.
